• Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah named as the 2018 Confederation of African Football Player of the Year. For the second consecutive year he has won the award.

• SR Innovation Exchange (SRiX), a Telangana-based technology business incubator signed a collaborative agreement Cranfield University (U.K.). It aims at providing British and Indian entrepreneurs access to new businesses and academic expertise.

• The Karnataka State Cabinet approved three metro rail projects and a feasibility report by Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES) on the suburban railway project. The Cabinet approved four suburban railway corridors at an estimated cost of Rs. 23,093 crore.

• The 12th edition of the Chennai Bird Race will be held on January 26 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It encourages amateur as well budding birdwatchers to spend a whole day spotting and identifying birds.

• The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has teamed up with an NGO, Apple Home for Orphan Kids at Neknampur of Manikonda, a voluntary organization in its west zone to bridge the gap between the hungry and food wastage.

• The Karnataka State government has sought Rs.2,400 crore from the Centre as drought relief. The State government had identified 156 taluks as drought-hit in the kharif season and 100 taluks in the rabi season. Farmers said that they have no option but to migrate.

• Environment Ministry launched the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) aimed at reducing toxic particulate matter in 102 Indian cities by 2024. The NCAP will be a mid-term, five-year plan with 2019 as the first year, while 2017 will be the base year for comparison of concentration.

• Egypt will host the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations between June 15 and July 13, Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Ahmad Ahmad announced in Dakar. It will be the fifth time Egypt stage the biennial showpiece of African football after 1959.

• Andhra Pradesh’s seventh airport at Orvakallu near Kurnool city was inaugurated by chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu. The airport has been categorized as ‘3C’ and is capable of handling turboprop aircraft like ATR-72 and Bombardier Q-400.

• The government relaxed norms for exports of fertilisers, including urea, potassic and phosphatic. Urea is the only fertiliser under statutory price control and its import for direct agriculture use is permitted through state trading enterprises (STEs) namely MMTC, STC under the foreign trade policy of the government.

• The Jammu and Kashmir administration set up a law commission, with Justice (Retd) M K Hanjura as its founding chairperson, to identity redundant and obsolete laws that can be repealed and suggest measures for quick redress of public grievances.

• India’s longest 300-metre single lane steel cable suspension bridge was inaugurated by Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu. The bridge across the Siang river at Yingkiong in Upper Siang district has been named Byorung Bridge.

The two-day event was inaugurated by the Vice President of India, M Venkaiah Naidu.

• Telangana Rashtra Samithi leader Kavitha Kalvakuntla urged the central government to clear the long pending Women Reservation Bill. The Nizamabad lawmaker took to Twitter and expressed that strong political will is required to pass the much awaited Women Reservation Bill.

• The year 2021 will be a busy year for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) as it has set itself the target to send astronauts to space. The Gaganyaan project by the space agency will make India the fourth nation to independently send humans into space announced ISRO chief Dr. K Sivan.
