One Liners – 29th August

• Arpinder Singh clinched India’s first men’s triple jump gold in 48 years, with a jump of 16.77m in the Asian Games. India’s last Asian gold medal in men’s triple jump had come in 1970 from Mohinder Singh Gill.

• Dutee Chand has won the silver medal in the 200m run in Asian Games. She crossed the finishing line in 23.20 seconds. The 22-year-old Odisha sprinter was not allowed to compete in 2014-15 under the IAAF’s hyperandrogenism policy due to which she missed the 2014 Commonwealth and Asian games. She fought and won a case against this policy at the Court of Arbitration for Sports.

• Spanish football league La Liga announced that it has partnered with India on Track (IOT) to launch La Liga Football Schools in India to grow and train the next generation of football players. With this announcement, La Liga becomes the first international football league to start a grassroots level programme in the country.

• Amazon Pay has acquired personal assistant platform Tapzo, its first such deal in India, in a bid to build on and widen the scope of its payment offering.

• Indian government and the World Bank have signed 300 million dollar loan agreement for India Energy Efficiency Scale Up Programme.

• Union government, Rajasthan and the World Bank signed a 250 million dollar Development Policy Loan to support Rajasthan in improving the performance of its electricity distribution sector under the state’s ‘24X7 Power for All’ program.

• The Union Government has constituted a 21-member science and technology council to advise PM Modi on matters related to science, technology and innovations. The council will be headed by K Vijay Raghavan, the principal scientific advisor.

• Former Indian opener Lalchand Rajput has been appointed the head coach of Zimbabwe national cricket team.

• Google has unveiled Project Navlekha to help Indian language publishers take their content online. The new platform will allow 1.35 lakh, Indian publishers, to digitize their offline content by creating instant web pages using scanned documents or PDFs.

• Indian government and the European Union have committed EUR 15 million each through the “Horizon 2020” programme to develop a Next Generation Influenza Vaccine to protect people throughout the world.

• Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare issued an advisory to all states and UTs to not allow manufacture, sale and advertisement of e-cigarettes and other Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems.
