• World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) is observed on 10 September. The Day aims to create awareness about suicide prevention and help the loved ones to fight suicidal thoughts. The day aims to raise awareness of the risks of suicide and to fund suicide prevention activities. World Suicide Prevention Day 2020 is celebrated virtually this year by spreading information about suicide prevention via social media platforms.

• Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated Doorstep Banking Services by Public Sector Banks (PSBs). She also felicitated the best performing banks on EASE Banking Reforms Index. Doorstep Banking Services aims to provide the convenience of banking services to the customers at their doorstep through the universal touchpoints of Call Centre, Web Portal, or Mobile App.

• Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), NITI Aayog, launched Aatmanirbhar Bharat ARISE-Atal New India Challenges (ANIC) initiative on 9 September. The initiative aimed to spur applied research and innovation in the Indian Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and startups. Bharat

• Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare and Minister of Earth Sciences Dr. Harsh Vardhan participated in the 73rd session of the World Health Organization (WHO) South East Asia Region (SEARO) through Video Conferencing. The event is held entirely through virtual platforms due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 73rd session is hosted by the Government of Thailand, from Bangkok.

• Ministry of Education is organizing a two-day conclave on School Education in 21st Century under Shikshak Parv. The conclave will be held digitally from 10th to 11th September 2020. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the conclave on 11th September 2020.

• On the occasion of Himalayan Day (September 9), the Vice President of India called for making nature’s conservation a people’s movement. Himalayan Day is celebrated on the 9th of September every year so as to sensitize the people on the importance of this fragile ecosystem as also to highlight the various issues concerning it. Himalayan Day was first observed in Uttarakhand in 2010 as an initiative of a group of noted environmentalists including Sunderlal Bahuguna, Anil Prakash Joshi and Radha Behen.

• Kerala metro phase 1 has been completed with the commissioning of the Thykoodam-Petta stretch. Thykoodam-Petta stretch of Kochi Metro was inaugurated by Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi VIjayan. Phase-1 of the Kochi Metro is now complete at a cost of ₹6218 crores. The proposal for Phase-2 of Kochi Metro is under active consideration of Govt of India and would be approved soon.

• August rainfall this year has been the highest since 1926 with 32.7 cm — or about 27% more than what is normal for the month, according to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). In August 1926, the rainfall recorded was 34.8 cm, exceeding the normal by 33%. The heavy rain in August was due to several long-lasting low-pressure systems, or rain-bearing winds, that formed in the Bay of Bengal and were vigorous enough to travel all the way from the south-eastern coast up to north-west India.
