• Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), Guwahati, developed an electrochemical sensing platform. It will detect carcinogenic or mutagenic compound N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) and N-nitrosodiethanolamine (NDEA) that are found in food items like cured meat, bacon, some cheese, and low-fat milk.

• International Day to End Obstetric Fistula (IDEOF) is observed on 23 May. The day is celebrated by the United Nations. In 2003, the United Nations Population Fund (UNPF), formerly known as the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) and its partners had launched a global campaign to End Obstetric Fistula.

• RBI announced another set of measures for strengthening the Economy in the uncertain times ushered in by the COVID-19 pandemic. This follows the earlier sets of measures announced by RBI on April 17, 2020 and on March 27, 2020.

• A report on ‘status of persons with disabilities in India during the COVID-19 crisis’, was released by the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP). Around 67% of them had no access to doorstep delivery of essentials, and only 22% confirmed that they have access to essentials.

• NTPC Ltd., the PSU under Ministry of Power and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC), the PSU under Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, has signed a MoU to set up a Joint Venture Company for Renewable Energy business. The MoU will enable both companies to accelerate their footprint in Renewable Energy.

• The U.S. has given notice that it will exit the Open Skies Treaty (OST), on the ground that Russia had “continuously and flagrantly” violated the treaty. U.S. President Donald Trump said the deal could be amended or a new one could be made. The treaty was signed in 1992 and entered into force on January 1, 2002.

• The United Nations Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth has listed Manipur’s ‘khudol’ (gift) among the top 10 global initiatives for an inclusive fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. Khudol is a crowdfunded initiative of Ya_All, an Imphal-based NGO. The initiative entails ensuring food supplies and health services for the LGBTQI+ community, people living with HIV, daily-wage earners, children and adolescents.

• The Central Government released the Ninth Edition of the Status Paper on the Government Debt, which provides a detailed analysis of the Overall Debt Position of the Government of India. This document covers details of the financing operations of the fiscal deficit of the Central Government during the year 2018-19. It also contains the Debt Management Strategy of the Central Government for the financial years from 2019-20 to 2021-22.
