• he accreditation of the National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL) in accordance with the International Standard for Laboratories (ISL) has been restored by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), which had been suspended since August 2019. Anti-Doping testing and activities at the NDTL will resume immediately as a result of this. In order to strengthen its research and anti-doping efforts, NDTL has collaborated with other WADA accredited laboratories. India is currently ranked third on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) global list of dope violators, trailing only Russia.

• Atul Kumar Goel was appointed as the Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Punjab National Bank (PNB) by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). Atul Kumar Goel will serve as PNB chief until December 31, 2024. He will succeed Mallikarjuna Rao, the incumbent MD and CEO of PNB, who will retire on 31st January 2022. Prior to this appointment, Atul Kumar Goel served as the MD and CEO of UCO Bank. The committee appointed Soma Sankara Prasad as MD and CEO of UCO Bank, who presently serves as the Deputy MD at State Bank of India.

• New Zealand cricketer Ross Taylor is the first-ever cricketer to play 100 matches in all three formatsTest, ODI and T20. Ross Taylor holds several records including scoring most ODI runs (8,581) for New Zealand. He also holds the record of scoring most runs in Test cricket (7,584) for New Zealand. He also holds the record of scoring most ODI centuries (21) and most centuries by a New Zealand batsman across all formats (40). He also holds the record of most catches by a New Zealand cricketer in international cricket with 346 catches.

• Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on December 29, 2021, inaugurated Uttarakhand’s 1st crocodile trail at Kakra and a jungle safari in Surai ecotourism zone in Terai east forest division in Khatima. The canal is home to more than 100 marsh crocodiles at present. Jungle safaris are till now only conducted in national parks and biosphere reserves in the state.

• The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to rename Jhansi Railway Station as ‘Veerangana Laxmibai Railway Station’. Jhansi station’s new name has been decided after Rani Laxmibai. UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath made the announcement regarding the new name of Jhansi station on December 29, 2021. Rani Laxmibai or Jhansi ki Rani was an Indian queen. She was the Maharani consort of the Maratha Princely State of Jhansi from 1843 to 1853 as the wife of Maharaja Gangadhar Rao.

• India on December 29, 2021, welcomed Egypt as the new member of the BRICS New Development Bank. With this, Egypt has now become a fourth new member to be admitted to BRICS NDB. The BRICS group includes five major emerging countries around the world- Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa and the multilateral bank BRICS NDB was established by these rising economies to finance the sustainable development projects.

• Japan has introduced a minibus lookalike world’s first dual-mode vehicle (DMV) in its town of Kaiyo. The vehicle can run on normal rubber tyres on the road but its steel wheels, which are in its underbelly, descend when it hits the rail tracks. The DMV can carry up to 21 passengers and runs at a speed of 60km/h on rail tracks and can go as fast as around 100km/h on public roads.

• The Indian Army has set up a quantum computing laboratory and a centre for artificial intelligence at a military engineering institute in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh. MM Naravane, the Chief of Army Staff General had also visited the facility during his recent visit to MP’s Mhow. The Defence Ministry of India announced that the Indian Army with support from the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) established the Quantum Lab at Military College of Telecommunication Engineering, Mhow in MP.
