• The Ministry of Earth Sciences launched the “Digital Ocean Application” to share ocean data and forecast services. These applications were launched under the digital ocean platform developed by INCOIS. The Indian National Oceanic Information Center (INCOIS) provides consulting services and information to various stakeholders.

• Railway Minister Shri Piyush Goyal announced that Indian Railways has successfully completed the new Vistadome tourist coach’s trial operation. The overall coaching factory in Chennai manufactures these coaches. Currently, 13 Vistadome coaches are operating in India. They operate in Araku Valley, Dadar and Madgaon, Darjeeling-Himalayan Railway, Kangra Valley Railway, Kalka-Shimla Railway, Nilgiri Mountain Railway, Matheran Mountain Railway.

• On December 29, 2020, the Gujarat government announced a new solar policy for 2021. According to this policy, any developer, individual or industry can establish solar projects in Gujarat. This policy’s main aim is to reduce the electricity cost of industrial units by approximately 50%. This can be achieved by removing the cap on the production capacity of solar projects in Gujarat.

• The World Health Organization recently launched the COVID-19 mobile application. The app provides users with the latest updates on covid-19. This application is called “WHO COVID-19 Application”. The mobile application launched by the World Health Organization will provide trusted information from experts from the organization and regional partners. It will provide regular updates and notifications about the scientific discoveries of covid-19.

• Dr Harsh Vardhan, Minister of Earth Sciences of the Union recently established a meteorological centre in the territory of the Ladakh Union. The Meteorological Center will provide weather forecasts for the area and strengthen the weather forecasts’ warning system in the area. This is the first weather centre in Ladakh. The Meteorological Center is the highest centre in India, located at an altitude of 3,500 meters.

• The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has made it mandatory for businesses with a monthly turnover of more than Rs. 50 lakh to pay at least 1% of their Goods and Services Tax (GST) liability in cash. It will be effective from 1st January 2021. The new rule restricts the use of Input Tax Credit (ITC) for discharging GST liability to 99%.

• The Minister of State for Tourism & Culture has undertaken a review meeting of the Adopt a Heritage: Apni Dharohar, Apni Pehchaan Project. This is a joint effort of the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Culture, Archaeological Survey of India and the State/UTs Government. Adopt a Heritage project was launched by the President of India on the occasion of World Tourism Day on 27th September, 2017.

• A recent report released by the Center for Economics and Business Research (CBER) predicts that India will again overtake the UK as the fifth-largest economy in 2025, and jump to third place by 2030. CBER is a UK-based company that provides independent economic forecasts for public and private firms. The Indian economy will grow by 9% in 2021 and 7% in 2022.

• India’s External Affairs Minister met with Qatar’s top leaders and discussed strengthening economic and security cooperation between the two countries. This visit is part of India’s ongoing outreach to West Asia, which the government considers to be part of its neighbourhood expansion. Qatar is a member of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

• The National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB) established Consortia for Medicinal Plants. The NMPB Consortia will handle/consider issues related to cultivation, trade, etc. The Ministry of AYUSH has launched consortia for medicinal plants, envisaging the necessity of connectivity between stakeholders in the supply chain and value chain of medicinal plants
