UNHCR Releases Mid-Year Trends for 2021

• The report provides a snapshot of displacement trends in the first half of 2021.

Key highlights:

• Global forced displacement exceeded 84 million by mid-2021, 42% of those are children below 18 years.

• Persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations and events seriously disturbing public order are the main reasons.

• Flaring conflict and violence around the world forced nearly 51 million people to flee within their own countries, with most new displacements occurring in Africa.

• Number of refugees also continued to increase during the first half of the year reaching nearly 21 million.

• Most new refugees came from just five countries: Central African Republic South Sudan, Syria, Afghanistan, Nigeria.

• Developing countries host 85 percent of the world’s refugees. Turkey hosts the largest number of refugees followed by Colombia.
